All Australian silver coins minted between 1910 and 1945 are 92.5% silver (sterling silver), while all Australian silver coins minted from 1946 to 1964 are 50% silver content.

After KGV passed in 1936, Edward VIII was monarch for less than a year before abdicating, leaving the throne to King George VI.   While the proofs were made, the mints hadn't quite managed to manufacture any coins during KEVIII's reign, as such no KEVIII coins were minted.  From 1938 the mints were ready with the dies for the new monarch, KGVI, and minting commenced.  KGVI reigned until 1952.

The 'Rams head' reverse design was introduced to the shilling in 1938, and remained until decimilisation.

The 1939 and 1940 shillings are considered scarce, while 1938 and 1946 .s are considered harder dates.
